Here is a list of all of the Class 47 locomotives shown in order by the number that they bore when they first entered service. Locomotives that underwent conversions that moved them into different sub-classes were often allocated new numbers and these are shown in the order borne by the locomotive in the subsequent numbers column.
Many of the locomotives in this class were named at some point in their career and all names that were allocated prior to 1989 are listed here. The associated notes following the locomotive list will give you an indication of when the names were allocated to the various locomotives but no attempt is made to indicate when names were removed. A couple of locomotives also had their names changed or altered and in this case the original name is listed with information about the changes in the notes.
I do not have full information on renumberings and withdrawals post 1984 and I have placed what information that I do know in the notes in the hope of eventually being able to incorporate the full information into the main table.
A These four locomotives were written off in accidents before TOPS numbers were allocated to the class.
B These five locomotives were the original 48 class due to having different engines. The engines were replaced to convert them to 47 class locomotives prior to TOPS numbers being applied.
C These locomotives were named before the TOPS numbers were applied.
D Renamed G.J Churchward soon afterwards.
E Name allocated after D1671 was written off.
F These locomotives were named before the conversion that led to their renumbering. The names were allocated while the locomotive wore its original TOPS number.
G These locomotives were named after 1979 but before 1984.
H These locomotives were named after 1984.
I Renamed S.S. Great Britain after 1984.
J between 1984 and 1989, 51 of these 79 locomotives were converted to 47/4 class and given numbers in the range 47605 - 47665. The other 28 were presumably written off but I don't know which were which. 21 of the converted locomotives also received names (either before or after conversion) as follows:
