Frequently Asked Questions

I have received quite a few emails asking me the same questions about my site, mostly from people wanting to make copies of my articles. To save you the trouble of sending me an email asking the same question as many others have already asked and to save me having to send the same answer many times, I have put answers to these common questions here. In many cases you may still need to contact me but at least the information below will give you a better idea of how I am likely to respond to your request.

If your question is not answered here then you are of course most welcome to send me an email to ask your question.

May I print a copy of your articles for my own use?

Any railway modeller is welcome to print one copy of any or all of my articles for their own use to help them with constructing their model railway. The printed copy is not to be distributed to anyone else without obtaining my prior permission. If you find the information in my articles useful then please show your appreciation by making a donation toward the cost of running this site.

May I print a copy of your articles for my friend who doesn't have internet access?

Please ask me before making copies of my articles for others.

May I reprint some of your articles on my website (with appropriate credit and links)?

No. I do not allow others to publish copies of my articles on their website even where the authorship and origin of the articles is properly acknowledged. The only places that copies of my articles appear online is on this website and that of the Australian Model Railway Association. You are welcome to provide links from your site to my articles if you wish.

May we reprint some of your articles in our club magazine?

Perhaps. Permission to do so is not automatic, you must send me an email requesting permission if you wish to do this.

I will consider requests from genuine model railway clubs, societies, and associations to reprint my earlier articles in their in-house publication provided that they acknowledge myself as Author and the club magazine in which the article first appeared. I will not normally give permission for the more recent articles to be reprinted. Where I do give permission for one or more of my earlier articles to be reprinted I will expect to be sent a copy of the issue of the in-house magazine in which the article appears.

May we reprint your articles in our magazine (which is not an in-house club magazine)?

Any requests to reprint my articles in other magazines should be in writing and should indicate the amount of the payment that you intend to make, which article(s) you wish to reprint, and any other applicable information. I will then consider your request.

I am looking for specific information about a Southern Railways prototype. Can you help me?

I am certainly not an expert on Southern Railways and chances are that if the information you are looking for is not on one of my pages I probably don't have the answer you are looking for. I suggest that anyone looking for specific information about Southern Railways join the Southern Email Group (SEmG) as there is almost certain to be a member of the group who can answer your question.

I have a railway related web site. Will you put a link to it on your site?

I am happy to provide links to almost any railway related web site. Just send me the details of your site and I will add it to the appropriate links page. A return link from your site to mine would also be appreciated.

I have just started in the hobby. What should I do first?

Your first model railway is unlikely to be your last as your skills and expectations are likely to change over time. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't try your best to get things right the first time, it just means that you shouldn't worry if everything isn't perfect.

To get ideas on what can be achieved with a model railway and to help you to determine what you wish to achieve you need to visit model railway exhibitions to see what other modellers have achieved, read articles about model railways (many of those on this site are appropriate for beginners), and experiment with those ideas on your own model railway.
